Monitoring Benefit
The Configuration Subscriptions & Licenses status test reports the licensing position of your tenant: which SKUs you hold, how many seats each one has, and how many of those are consumed. It is what tells you that you are about to run out of licences before a new starter cannot be provisioned.
This is the parent check. Two related checks break the same data down further:
- Configuration - Subscriptions & Licenses - License Group — the same SKUs grouped, with their service plans expanded
- Configuration - Subscriptions & Licenses - New Subscription — subscriptions added to the tenant
How do we verify the monitoring test results?
Read the same licensing data from the tenant by hand. Microsoft Graph PowerShell is the current method — the MSOnline module historically used for this, including Get-MsolAccountSku and Get-MsolSubscription, has been retired by Microsoft and no longer authenticates.
Install the module if it is not present:
Install-Module Microsoft.Graph -Scope CurrentUser
Then read the SKUs and their seat counts:
Connect-MgGraph -Scopes 'Organization.Read.All'

@{Name='Total'; Expression={ $_.PrepaidUnits.Enabled }},
@{Name='Consumed'; Expression={ $_.ConsumedUnits }},
@{Name='Remaining'; Expression={ $_.PrepaidUnits.Enabled - $_.ConsumedUnits }},
@{Name='Suspended'; Expression={ $_.PrepaidUnits.Suspended }},
@{Name='Warning'; Expression={ $_.PrepaidUnits.Warning }} |
Sort-Object SkuPartNumber |
Format-Table -AutoSize
Compare the output with the ENow dashboard. The figures should match; if they do not, note the time of each reading, because licence counts change as users are provisioned and deprovisioned.
For a fuller explanation of how the owned, assigned and remaining figures relate to one another, see License Cost.

Common warning or error results, and potential solutions
- The check fails to return any data. The monitoring account needs directory read permission in the tenant. Confirm it still holds the roles listed in the prerequisites for your ENow version.
- Counts differ slightly from the Microsoft 365 admin center. Small differences are normal and reflect when each source last refreshed. Persistent large differences are not.
-
A SKU you own is missing from the results. Trial and add-on subscriptions sometimes appear under a SKU part number you do not recognise. Check the full
Get-MgSubscribedSkuoutput rather than the dashboard summary before concluding it is absent. - Suspended or warning units are non-zero. These indicate a subscription in a grace period after a failed payment or an expired term, and the seats will stop working when the grace period ends. Check Billing in the Microsoft 365 admin center.
