Monitoring Benefit
The New Subscription check reports subscriptions present on the tenant along with their lifecycle detail — when a subscription was created, its current status, and the date it next renews or expires.
Two things make this worth watching. A subscription appearing that nobody on your team ordered is worth knowing about, because anyone with the right role can start a trial. And a subscription approaching its next lifecycle date without a renewal in place is a licensing outage with a known date attached.
It reads the same tenant data as Configuration - Subscriptions & Licenses Status, viewed by subscription rather than by seat count.
How do we verify the monitoring test results?
The MSOnline module historically used for this check, including Get-MsolSubscription, has been retired by Microsoft and no longer authenticates. There are two current ways to read the same information.
Microsoft 365 admin center — the authoritative view for renewal dates and billing state:
- Go to Billing > Your products.
- Each subscription lists its status and its next renewal or expiry date.
- Compare the list against what ENow reports. A subscription in ENow that is absent here, or vice versa, is the finding.
Microsoft Graph PowerShell — for seat counts per SKU, which is the part of this data ENow surfaces on the dashboard:
Connect-MgGraph -Scopes 'Organization.Read.All'
Get-MgSubscribedSku |
Select-Object SkuPartNumber, SkuId,
@{Name='Total'; Expression={ $_.PrepaidUnits.Enabled }},
@{Name='Consumed'; Expression={ $_.ConsumedUnits }},
@{Name='Suspended'; Expression={ $_.PrepaidUnits.Suspended }},
@{Name='Warning'; Expression={ $_.PrepaidUnits.Warning }} |
Sort-Object SkuPartNumber |
Format-Table -AutoSize
Note that Get-MgSubscribedSku returns the SKUs on the tenant and their seat counts, not billing dates. Use the admin center for renewal and expiry dates.
Common warning or error results, and potential solutions
- An unexpected subscription has appeared. Most often a free trial started by a user with a licensing role, or a self-service sign-up. Check Billing in the admin center for who acquired it. Self-service purchase can be controlled at the tenant level if it is not wanted.
- Suspended units are non-zero. The subscription is in a grace period following a failed payment or an expired term. The seats keep working until the grace period ends, then stop. This is a billing action, not a technical one.
- Warning units are non-zero. The subscription has passed its expiry date and is within the window before Microsoft deprovisions it. Treat this as urgent — data associated with those licences becomes inaccessible once the window closes.
- A renewal was completed but the check has not cleared. Allow a monitoring cycle for the tenant to reflect the change, then confirm the status in the admin center reads Active before investigating further.
